You're standing on the dam that made Lake Gregory. WPA crews began damming Houston Creek in 1937, but federal funding collapsed in 1938 and Arthur Gregory finished the job out of his own pocket. Days later, the great March 1938 floods filled the entire lake in just three days.

In the 1850s this basin was "Houston Flat," a roaring center of mountain logging. Then in 1926 citrus grower Arthur Gregory Sr. arrived for its timber and left with a far bigger idea: damming Houston Creek to create the lake that now bears his name.
