Wintering Bald Eagles & the 40-Year Count
Each winter, Southern California's largest gathering of wintering bald eagles patrols these mountain lakes, Lake Gregory among them. Since 1978, Forest Service volunteers have counted them on the same mornings across a chain of reservoirs, building a 40-year record that helped document the eagle's recovery.

Scan the water for ducks, geese, herons and wing-drying cormorants, turtles basking on logs, and even one of Lake Gregory's two resident bald eagles — then watch the pines for crested Steller's jays and bushy-tailed western gray squirrels.
