The story
Mountains are pushed up and built by the friction and train wreck of the pacific plate converging with the continental plate upon which north america rides. Basins are where the plate is literally stretched thin and become the valleys and alluvial fill we see as the ranges weather and gravity pulls their falloff down the slopes in a seeming attempt to flatten the world over with alluvium skirting their bases in fans.
