Mulholland is ruined in his suffering and the guilt he feels changes him profoundly. Until his death 6 years later, he is haunted by the tragedy. A sad life's end for an amazing man and modern day horatio alger, heading west and rising to the top of his profession after beginning as a ditch tender of the zanja that brought water to downtown angelenos through its early history...

The loss of life can only be estimated but there is a consensus among researchers between 400 and 500 were lost with some pushing the number closer to or beyond 600 souls.

The Red Cross and other relief agencies, cooperation with and assistance from neighboring and far away communities become a hallmark of teamwork in the wake of a disaster.  The inquest was held and root causes for the failure proposed some stronger arguments than others.  The speculation and conspiracy theories and links to aqueduct bombings in the owens valley were dismissed by scientists at the time. The geology of the canyon and a rock called Mica Schist proved to make things complex enough for what was known at the time - that the department and Mulholland were not held liable upon the conclusion of the inquest. This did not slow the department of water and power in contributing mightily to the clean up and restitution efforts. 

Mulholland returns to his orchards and ranch in the San Fernando Valley which has since been replaced with the Northridge Fashion Plaza Shopping mall.

On a side note - The design of the existing Hollywood reservoir is a duplicate of the St. Francis Dam. After the disaster, the water level was quickly lowered to around half filled and it remains that way until this day.

There is no mica schist in the hills that make up Hollywood...
